Air Handler Repair & Replacement in San Jose, CA

    An air handler is the indoor equipment used with many heat-pump and electric HVAC systems. It typically contains the blower, indoor coil, filter section and condensate components. When airflow, comfort or equipment operation is off, the indoor unit is one part of the system we evaluate.

    Air Handler vs. Furnace

    A gas furnace makes heat by combustion: it has burners, a heat exchanger and a venting system, usually with a cooling coil installed above or beside it. An air handler does not burn fuel. It is commonly paired with a heat pump or cooling system, and some designs include electric resistance heat or another approved supplemental-heating arrangement depending on the equipment.

    That distinction is why air handlers come up in nearly every heat pump conversation. When a home moves from a gas furnace and separate air conditioner to a heat pump, the indoor equipment often changes from a furnace to an air handler, unless the project uses a different compatible configuration such as a dual-fuel design. Whether the new unit fits the existing space is something we verify — dimensions, clearances, duct connections, drainage, electrical requirements and service access all get checked before anything is ordered.

    Existing ductwork may be reusable when its condition, leakage, insulation, sizing and airflow are appropriate for the selected equipment. We evaluate that rather than assuming it either way.

    What We Inspect and Measure

    An air handler complaint — weak airflow, water at the unit, a system that keeps shutting down — is a measurable condition. We diagnose first and recommend second.

    Blower & Airflow

    Blower motor operation, wheel condition and delivered airflow, measured against what the system and duct design require rather than assumed.

    Static Pressure

    External static pressure across the unit tells us whether the duct system, filter and coil are letting the blower do its job.

    Coil & Filter Section

    Indoor coil condition, filter fit and sealing, and whether the filter rating in use is appropriate for the airflow this system needs.

    Condensate & Drainage

    Pan condition, drain slope and termination, and float-switch operation where applicable. A blocked condensate path can shut cooling equipment down and can also create water problems around the indoor unit.

    Electrical & Controls

    Control board, low-voltage circuits, safeties and any electric heat elements, verified against the equipment requirements.

    Cabinet & Connections

    Duct connections at the cabinet, insulation condition, access panels and service clearance, including areas where air leakage or poor connections may affect airflow.

    Repair or Replace an Air Handler

    Many air-handler problems can be repaired, depending on the diagnosis. Issues may involve the blower motor, controls, condensate components, cabinet or duct connections, coil condition, or other serviceable parts. Replacement becomes relevant when the indoor equipment is failing, no longer compatible with the outdoor equipment being installed, cannot deliver the required airflow, or when the overall scope makes replacement the better-supported option. Age by itself is not the deciding factor.

    When replacement is the right call, these are the items that determine scope and cost:

    • Physical dimensions and clearances in the existing space — a new unit does not automatically fit the old footprint.
    • Duct connection sizes and the transitions required to attach the unit without choking airflow.
    • Condensate drainage and whether the existing path still works with the new cabinet.
    • Electrical requirements including conductor size, breaker, disconnect and the equipment MCA/MOCP ratings.
    • Service access — filter changes and future repairs need room to work.
    • The calculated load for the home, so blower capability and coil selection match what the house actually needs.
