    Years of direct sun exposure and an improper original installation left the rooftop heat pump refrigerant lines with cracked, missing, and deteriorated insulation. Damaged or missing insulation on refrigerant lines can negatively affect heat pump performance, particularly during hotter and colder outdoor conditions.

    Diagnosis

    Instead of simply replacing the deteriorated insulation the same way it had originally been installed, we recommended correcting the installation with UV-taped insulation and metal covers so the repair would hold up long term on an exposed rooftop.

    Repair Performed

    Our team, Adolph and Aaron, removed the deteriorated insulation, installed new insulation over the copper refrigerant piping, UV-taped the insulation for added protection, and fabricated and installed metal covers over the exposed piping and insulation runs.

    Outcome

    The heat pump refrigeration lines are now properly insulated and protected from direct UV exposure. The added metal covering helps prevent the sun from prematurely deteriorating the new insulation, providing a more durable installation while helping the heat pump systems operate properly during heating and cooling conditions.

    Why the insulation repair was corrected, not repeated

    Damaged or missing insulation on refrigerant lines can negatively affect heat pump performance, particularly during hotter and colder outdoor conditions.
