    Mini-split systems are available in several indoor-unit styles. The right option depends on the room, available mounting space, service access, and equipment pairing.

    Ductless vs. Ducted Mini-Splits

    "Mini-split" does not automatically mean ductless. Both configurations use the same heat-pump technology — the difference is how conditioned air reaches each space.

    Ductless Mini-Splits

    • Indoor units deliver conditioned air directly into the room — no conventional duct distribution required.
    • Wall-mounted, ceiling cassette and floor-mounted indoor styles.
    • Independent temperature control in each zone.
    • A practical fit for additions, ADUs, garages and areas without suitable existing ductwork.

    Ducted Mini-Splits

    • A compact air handler concealed above a ceiling or inside a soffit.
    • Conditions one or several nearby rooms through short, properly designed duct runs.
    • Keeps indoor equipment out of sight for a traditional look.
    • Requires correct duct sizing, return airflow and attention to available static pressure.

    Neither configuration is universally better. Some compatible systems can combine ductless and ducted indoor units on the same outdoor system when the equipment and design support it.

    Single-Zone, Multi-Zone & Right-Sizing

    The right configuration depends on your home's loads, layout and zoning goals — not on a rule that more zones is always better.

    Single-Zone

    One outdoor system serving one indoor zone — a straightforward fit for a single space such as an addition, office, garage conversion or ADU.

    Multi-Zone

    One outdoor system serving multiple compatible indoor units, each independently controlled. Capacity is shared across zones, so the design of the whole system matters.

    Sized by Load, Not by Square Footage

    Every Air Care mini-split design starts with the actual heating and cooling load of each space — insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage, layout and design conditions — using load-calculation principles such as Manual J rather than rules of thumb.

    Bigger is not automatically better: oversizing can contribute to short cycling and comfort problems. Many mini-split systems use inverter-driven compressors that can modulate capacity. Actual efficiency, sound, and operating range depend on the indoor/outdoor equipment pairing and installation. When comparing equipment, current efficiency metrics include SEER2 and HSPF2, while heating capacity should be checked against the calculated load.

    What a Proper Mini-Split Installation Includes

    Installation quality is an important part of system performance. A complete installation addresses:

    • Refrigerant line sets routed and connected per manufacturer requirements
    • Condensate drainage — cooling operation produces water at each indoor unit
    • Equipment mounting and placement for airflow, service access and sound
    • Electrical and control wiring sized to the selected equipment
    • Evacuation, startup and refrigerant-system verification
    • Commissioning of controls, heating and cooling operation, zone performance and drainage

    Electrical requirements depend on the selected equipment — including minimum circuit ampacity and breaker sizing — and on your home's existing electrical conditions. We evaluate this during design; installing a mini-split does not automatically require an electrical panel upgrade.

    Mini-Split vs. Central Heat Pump

    A central ducted heat pump conditions the whole home through one central air handler and a full duct system. Mini-splits use one or more smaller indoor units — ductless or ducted — for room-by-room delivery. Both are heat-pump technology; the better fit depends on your home's layout, existing ductwork and comfort goals.
