    Air Care was called to a residential home in the Almaden area of San Jose because the air conditioner was not coming on. Fernando began by disconnecting power and opening the outdoor unit so he could access the electrical compartment and diagnose the problem.

    Diagnosis

    Fernando tested the existing capacitor and hard-start kit. The capacitor tested bad, confirming the failed component that needed to be replaced.

    Repair Performed

    Before installing the replacement, Fernando tested the new capacitor to verify it was good. He then installed it, secured it with the proper mounting bracket, reconnected the wiring to the correct terminals, checked the connections for tightness, and reinstalled the existing hard-start kit.

    Outcome

    Once the AC was back in operation, Fernando performed a one-time cleaning of the outdoor unit to remove the built-up dirt and debris. He then ran the system and checked the supply-air temperature inside the home. Everything checked out properly at the time of service.

The capacitor was replaced during the visit rather than leaving a known out-of-spec component in service, helping reduce the chance of the air conditioning system experiencing a capacitor-related failure during hot summer weather.
