    Whole-Home Filtration & MERV Ratings

    Filtration is the foundation of most indoor air quality work: as your system circulates air, the filter physically captures particles passing through its media. Upgrading filtration is often the highest-value first step — but only when the filter is matched to what your system can actually handle.

    • MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how effectively a filter captures particles of different sizes — higher numbers capture smaller particles.
    • Higher MERV is not automatically better. A more restrictive filter adds resistance, and if your system was not designed for it, airflow and performance can suffer.
    • The right filter depends on your equipment, blower capability, duct sizing and available static pressure — which is why we match the filter to the system rather than defaulting to the highest rating.
    • Deep-media filter cabinets provide more filter surface area and can reduce airflow resistance at a given filtration level compared with some one-inch filters. Actual pressure drop depends on the filter, cabinet and system.
    • Any filter has to be maintained and replaced or cleaned as its condition and the equipment or filter instructions require. A heavily loaded filter can add airflow resistance regardless of its rating.

    Air Purification, UV & Air Scrubbers

    Beyond filtration, several air-cleaning technologies can be added to your HVAC system. We think it is important you understand what each one is actually designed to do — and what it is not.

    • Filtration and purification are not the same thing. Filtration physically captures particles as air passes through filter media; other air-cleaning technologies use different mechanisms depending on the product.
    • UV-C systems are commonly applied at the evaporator-coil and drain-pan area to irradiate surfaces where moisture can support microbial growth. Performance depends on UV output, placement, exposure, airflow and maintenance.
    • A UV light does not automatically sterilize all the air in a home. Performance depends on UV output, placement, exposure time, airflow and maintenance.
    • In-duct air-cleaning products use different technologies depending on the product. If one is being considered, the recommendation should be tied to the specific indoor-air concern and the product's documented performance, testing and emissions characteristics.
    • No single product addresses every indoor air concern — the right approach depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

    Fresh-Air Ventilation & Energy Recovery Ventilators

    Well-sealed homes can benefit from deliberate outdoor-air exchange instead of relying only on leakage or open windows. An Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) can provide controlled, balanced ventilation while transferring some heat and moisture between the outgoing and incoming airstreams. That can reduce the energy penalty of ventilation compared with bringing in untreated outdoor air without energy recovery. ERV operation, airflow, filtration and integration depend on the equipment and the home's design.

    An ERV is not an air purifier and does not eliminate indoor contaminants — it manages air exchange. It is also different from a whole house fan, which is a comfort-cooling tool that flushes the home with outdoor air on cool evenings, and from an attic fan, which primarily ventilates the attic. Each serves a distinct purpose, and we will tell you plainly which one fits your goal.

    Where ventilation matters most

    • Tightly sealed or recently weatherized homes where indoor air has few natural exchange paths
    • New construction and ADU projects where the design or current code calls for mechanical ventilation
    • Homes where cooking, laundry and occupancy moisture builds up faster than it can escape
    • Homes where controlled outdoor-air exchange is preferred instead of relying on open windows

    Ductwork, Airflow & Static Pressure

    Your duct system is the delivery network for everything else on this page. The best filter, purifier or ventilation equipment cannot perform if air cannot move through the system properly — and not every air quality concern comes from the ducts. These are the factors we evaluate:

    • Duct condition and leakage — gaps, disconnected runs and crushed flex duct waste conditioned air and can pull unfiltered air from attics and crawlspaces into the airstream.
    • Supply and return sizing — undersized or restricted returns can limit airflow and reduce what filtration or equipment upgrades can accomplish.
    • Static pressure — every component in the airstream, including filters and coils, adds resistance. We measure total external static pressure so the duct system, filtration and equipment work together.
    • Balancing — adjusting airflow to each room so temperatures stay even throughout the home.

    Our ductwork services cover replacement, repair, sealing, sizing and balancing — the condition and design of the duct system itself. That is different from duct cleaning, which is not a service Air Care provides. If dust is the concern, possible contributing factors can include filtration, return-duct leakage and airflow balance, and an evaluation will show which ones apply to your home.
