The property previously relied on individual gas wall furnaces for heating each apartment, and six gas-fired water heaters served the building. The wall furnaces provided heating only, with no cooling for residents, and all of the equipment kept the property dependent on natural gas.
We recommended a full electrification approach: removing the wall furnaces and installing a dedicated ductless mini-split heat pump system for each apartment, and replacing all six gas water heaters with new heat pump water heaters.
Our installation team, Mark and Juan, removed five wall furnaces and installed a dedicated ductless mini-split heat pump system for each apartment, providing residents with efficient heating and cooling from a single system. The project also included removing six existing gas water heaters and replacing them with new heat pump water heaters, further reducing the property’s reliance on natural gas.
This Berkeley multi-family property received a major electrification upgrade with five new ductless heat pump systems and six new heat pump water heaters. Each apartment now has its own ductless system providing both heating and air conditioning, replacing the previous wall furnaces that provided heating only. The new heat pump water heaters also replaced the property’s gas-fired water heating equipment, creating a more comprehensive transition from gas to electric heat pump technology.
